SUMMER 2021: TOWN CENTRE GARDEN
Business Improvement District
One Maidstone is converting a town centre garden at the site of its offices into a wildlife friendly space in the summer of 2021, for completion in August.
The project is funded by advertising money raised from the One Maidstone town centre magazine, and will incorporate volunteer days and plant ‘amnesties’ to help bring the space to life.
The garden is owned by the Mall shopping centre, who have given kind permission for the project.
MARCH 2021: WINTER PLANTERS
Business Improvement District
One Maidstone has contributed funding to provide numerous winter planters across the town centre to add visual interest in anticipation of re-opening our High Street.
FEBRUARY 2021: TOWN CENTRE MAGAZINE, WINTER ISSUE
Business Improvement District
The winter issue of the One Maidstone town centre magazine has now been distributed to 15k homes and businesses, despite having to be produced during the third national lockdown.
The shutdown special includes highlights from our Letters from Lockdown series, and is designed to give readers an insight into what repeated closures have been like for our businesses.
The issue is free to read online at www.onemaidstone.com/magazine
FEBRUARY 2021: CCTV LIVE MONITORING
Business Improvement District
In light of a Council decision to move to a record-only system for its CCTV network, not for profit BID organisation One Maidstone approached Maidstone Borough Council with the offer of delivering a 24-hour monitoring service for the town centre, committing to fund operatives itself at no cost to MBC. This proposal was accepted, with the One Maidstone Business Improvement District taking over live monitoring of Maidstone town centre’s CCTV network on a permanent basis, thus ensuring that pictures and intelligence are available as events unfold, rather than to watch back retrospectively.
JANUARY 2021: LETTERS FROM LOCKDOWN
Business Improvement District
During the third national lockdown, One Maidstone offered businesses a voice to reach customers with its Letters from Lockdown project. Published across social media and in the Shutdown Special issue of the town centre magazine, businesses were able to explain how extended closures had affected them, and encourage the public to support them online and upon re-opening.
CHRISTMAS 2020: TOWN CENTRE MAGAZINE CHRISTMAS ISSUE
Business Improvement District
With a second national lockdown days away, One Maidstone was able to secure rush advance print copies of its Christmas town centre magazine, managing to deliver to businesses the day before closures. The remaining volume were delivered to local homes as usual during lockdown.
CHRISTMAS 2020: SECRET SWITCH ON
Business Improvement District
With a Christmas lights switch on event unable to take place in 2020, One Maidstone announced the Secret Switch On, a pre-recorded and socially distanced hour long concert film going online on the evening our traditional switch on show would have taken place.
Performances from local singers and dancers were filmed in high profile venues around the town centre, out of hours and without an audience, combined to create an evening of entertainment and shown during lockdown, November 2020.
CHRISTMAS 2020: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Business Improvement District
One Maidstone decided to proceed with installing its Christmas lights scheme in 2020, despite the disruption of the year.
The One Maidstone Business Improvement District took on provision of Christmas lights installation and accompanying switch on event for the first time in 2019, after Maidstone Borough Council were unable to put on the event in 2018. The reinstated event in Jubilee Square was attended by an estimated 4-5k people.

Business Improvement District
From June 2020, as non-essential retail and services re-opened after lockdown, One Maidstone visited town centre businesses to document them post-closure. JUNE 2020: TEMPORARY AMBASSADORS
Business Improvement District
One Maidstone’s BID Ambassadors are already a familiar sight around our town centre streets, supporting Kent Police and businesses with incidents of anti-social behaviour and responding to radio calls.
From Monday 15th June, as retail footfall increased with the re-opening of non-essential retail, they were joined by a team of an additional four temporary Ambassadors.
The One Maidstone Business Improvement District brought in these new hosts to act as meet and greet staff, in order to help members of the public understand the new Covid secure measures that were in place, and to act as a point of contact for store staff. They monitored the town centre to identify ‘hot spots’ and note issues that may arise, the intelligence for which One Maidstone can fed back to the relevant Council authority or Kent Police colleagues.
