2019 sees One Maidstone provide Christmas lights for Maidstone town centre for the first year, having previously been under the provision of Maidstone Borough Council.

With no switch on event taking place in the town centre in 2018, One Maidstone is delighted to be bringing the popular event back, using funds collected from local businesses as part of the Business Improvement District.

The scheme of lights will differ from previous incarnations, with One Maidstone opting for a tasteful red and white scheme.

Of the decision, BID Manager Ilsa Butler says ‘We wanted to mark One Maidstone’s first year at the helm of the town centre Christmas lights display with a classic design. We chose this scheme, along with the star patterns, to project a warm and cosy feeling, along a traditional theme. We know that having a beautiful light display draws shoppers in around the Christmas period, and we hope to boost trade for the local businesses we represent during this important trading period.’

Local supplier Gala Lights was awarded the contract to provide and install the lighting.

Gala Lights Managing Director, Christopher Stille says ‘We’re delighted to have been selected to design and deliver One Maidstone’s new Christmas lighting scheme. We’re Christmas lighting specialists, supplying lights to towns and cities around the country, but as Maidstone is our home town, this scheme is extra-special.’

  • Maidstone’s new scheme includes approx. 100,000 LED lights
  • Each aluminium frame is hand-made, welded and decorated

Maidstone has revealed that the celebrity turning on Maidstone’s town centre Christmas lights will be Hollyoaks actor Jake Quickenden. The singer and actor hit our screens as a contestant on ITV’s X Factor, before winning the hearts of the nation as runner-up in I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, and skating to victory as the winner of Dancing on Ice in 2018.

The switch on event will take place on Thursday November 21st, at 6.30pm, in Jubilee Square, supported and broadcast live by KMFM. Free entertainment will run from 5-7pm, and will include rousing performances from Powerhouse Gospel Choir and the Military Wives Choir, with carols from Molehill Primary Academy pupils, alongside a song from Jake himself.
